In a fast-paced melee taking place in a dungeon room, the time it takes to announce & resolve an action approximates how long it would take in real time. "Mialee casts magic missile spell on the Troll!" (or even better, the Mialee player utters prepared phrase " Sagitta magicus, ignis!") ĭM: "Orcs 1, 2 and 3 throw their javelins at Regdar!" Replace it with players simply announcing what they're doing and then rolling dice if required: What about throwing out initiative rolls, period? Why do we even use turn-based combat in a role-playing game? I've been reading through alternative rules for resolving initiative in D&D:
